February is National Children's Dental Health Month

Iwata at the VV ClinicLast year, almost 400 dental team members in Tri-County Dental Society participated in Give Kids A Smile® events during National Children's Dental Health Month providing care and raising awareness of the importance of access to dental care for uninsured children.

"It's heartbreaking to see a child's smile destroyed by severe tooth decay," said Dr. Rick Nichols, GKAS Committee Chair.  "Imagine not being able to eat, sleep and pay attention in school because you have a mouthful of toothaches."

In 2009, more than 1,650 children were screened. Of which, 553 children received care at no cost to their families.  The Tri-County Dental Society expects to see and treat even more children in February 2010.

 Donated Dental Services (DDS)
Volunteer Now!!

Donated Dental Services (DDS) is a program of the California Dental Association (CDA) and the National Foundation of Dentistry for the Handicapped in which volunteer dental professionals provide one or two treatment plans to an often overlooked and at-risk population of elderly individuals who cannot afford treatment or qualify for government sponsored dental programs.

A DDS coordinator is responsible for determining eligibility of applicants, linking patients with nearby volunteer dentists, monitoring each patient’s progress through their treatment plan, and coordinating specialist and laboratory services.   Patient acceptance and treatment options are at the discretion of each volunteer.

Seniors in your community are waiting for your assistance! If you would like more information, would like to volunteer, or know someone in need of dental assistance contact the Donated Dental Services Program Administrator at 1.800.CDA.SMILE (232.7645) or visit the CDA website.
